Wealden Funeral Services

The Personal Touches When it comes to the finer details of a funeral, there really are no “right” or “wrong” ways to do things—there is only what feels right for your family and the person you are remembering. We like to think of these elements as a way to tell a story, and we are here to help you piece that story together at a pace that suits you. Please don’t feel any pressure to make these decisions today; we’ll give you all the time and space you need to chat things through at home before anything is set in stone. A good place to start is often the coffin, which is a deeply personal choice. For many, the classic, polished look of a wood-veneer or solid timber coffin, like Oak or Mahogany, brings a sense of timeless dignity to a burial. If you’re planning a cremation, a beautifully finished wood-veneer version is a very popular and respectful choice. But if you’re looking for something a bit more “earthy” or green, we have a lovely range of natural, hand-woven options. Things like Willow, Seagrass, Bamboo, and Wicker, or even the wonderful, soft texture of Jute, have a much warmer, more organic feel. They look beautiful in a natural burial ground or a quiet chapel, and because they’re entirely biodegradable, they’re very kind to the environment. Sometimes, though, you might want something that really screams “them.” That’s where our colourful “picture coffins” come in. These can be printed with high-quality images of whatever they loved most, maybe a favourite wildlife scene, the crest of their football team, or a landscape that meant the world to them. It’s a wonderful way to put their personality front and centre. On the other hand, if you prefer something very simple and understated, we have dignified natural wood or even reinforced cardboard. These are actually lovely because families often like to write their own messages or signatures directly onto them. We also fully support shroud burials if you’re looking for a more ancient, gentle way to return to the earth. Then, there’s the journey itself. While we’re very proud of our classic black hearses and limousines, being an independent family business means we can be as flexible as you need us to be. The procession is such a poignant part of the day, and it doesn’t have to stay “traditional” if that doesn’t fit. We’ve helped arrange all sorts of departures, from horse-drawn carriages and vintage motorcycle side-cars to bright, eco-friendly electric vehicles, and event tractor and trailers for our local farm community. We can even plan the route to pass by their old home, a favourite pub, or a spot in the Wealden countryside with a view they loved.
